Buying Indian onions: a practical importer checklist

What to confirm on size, variety, condition, packing, inspection and shipment timing before placing an order.

Read article

Onion quality starts with a clear specification. Before requesting a quote, agree on the target size range (for example, 45–65 mm where suitable), colour, variety, maturity, acceptable skin condition and tolerance for damaged, sprouted or undersized bulbs.

Ask your supplier to confirm: the crop/dispatch window; sorting and grading method; net weight and bag type; ventilation; lot identification; loading photos; and whether a pre-shipment inspection can be arranged. For fresh produce, discuss the expected transit time and handling conditions as well as the product price.

Samples and photos are useful, but they do not replace written specifications and agreed inspection terms. Confirm destination-country plant-health, residue, labelling and import requirements with your buyer or customs broker before shipment.

Market prices and crop availability change quickly. Treat any price as provisional until a dated supplier offer is received.

Fresh vs dehydrated onion and garlic products

How to compare shelf life, storage, packaging and intended use when choosing a product format.

Read article

Fresh onions and garlic serve retail and food-service needs, while dehydrated flakes, granules and powders are commonly considered by seasoning manufacturers, snack producers, sauces and institutional kitchens. The right format depends on the buyer’s recipe, processing equipment, storage conditions and purchase volumes.

When sourcing dehydrated products, specify the form (flakes, minced, granules or powder), mesh or particle size where relevant, moisture limits, colour, flavour profile, microbiological criteria, foreign-matter controls, packaging barrier, shelf-life expectation and required certificates or test reports.

Do not compare prices on a simple kilogram-for-kilogram basis: fresh and dehydrated products have very different moisture content, yield, handling and use cases. Request the technical specification and calculate cost per usable ingredient quantity for your application.

Store each product according to its label and technical sheet. Confirm that the product, additives (if any), packaging and claims meet the rules of the destination market.

Shipping · Logistics

Planning an agricultural container shipment

Key questions about FCL, LCL, reefer equipment, port costs and documents.

Read article

First decide whether the shipment is full-container load (FCL) or less-than-container load (LCL). FCL can give the shipper more control over packing and handling, while LCL may suit smaller trial orders but can involve consolidation, extra handling and longer schedules. Compare the complete landed cost, not only the ocean-freight line.

For temperature-sensitive cargo, confirm whether a reefer container is required, the agreed set point and ventilation, pre-cooling responsibilities, cargo-stuffing procedure, monitoring and who pays for plug-in charges. Never assume all fresh produce should travel at the same temperature; requirements differ by commodity and condition.

Ask the forwarder for a dated quotation showing origin haulage, terminal charges, documentation, ocean freight, destination charges, free time, transit estimate, transshipment details and validity. Confirm the named ports, Incoterm and the point where costs and risks transfer.

Typical documents may include a commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin and commodity-specific health or phytosanitary documents, depending on product and destination. Have the buyer’s customs broker confirm the exact document set before loading.

Gulf markets · Buyer preparation

Preparing an agricultural offer for Gulf buyers

Build a clear quotation for importers in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Qatar.

Read article

Gulf buyers may source through importers, wholesale markets, food-service distributors, retailers and processors. The right route depends on product type, volume, seasonality, buyer relationships and the destination’s import rules. Avoid assuming that one specification or label will work across every GCC country.

A useful offer identifies the exact product and grade, origin, packing, net weight, quantity, shipment window, price basis (such as FOB or CIF with the named port), quotation validity, payment terms and documents included. If the offer is CIF, spell out the destination port and the freight assumptions. If the buyer accepts FOB, agree on the nominated forwarder, loading window, document process and responsibility for local charges.

Before committing, verify the buyer’s company identity, trade references, import capability and bank details independently. Agree on inspection standards and how quality claims will be handled. Confirm current import permits, food-safety rules, Arabic/English labelling where applicable and any product-specific restrictions with the importer or customs broker.

This is a planning guide, not a statement of current tariffs or live market prices. Check the relevant authority’s current rules for each destination.

South Asia · Market trends

Reading agricultural demand across South Asia

How seasonality, logistics, currency and border procedures influence trade decisions.

Read article

South Asian markets are not one uniform destination. Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and the Maldives differ in consumer demand, import procedures, transport routes, foreign-exchange conditions and port or border logistics. A viable opportunity in one market may not translate directly to another.

For fresh produce, compare local harvest timing with India’s crop calendar and the buyer’s required delivery window. For processed ingredients, assess whether the customer is a distributor, food manufacturer or food-service operator, and ask about product consistency, packaging size and repeat-order potential.

Track five items before quoting: (1) recent, dated supplier offers; (2) destination wholesale or importer indications; (3) road/sea freight and border or port costs; (4) currency and payment risk; and (5) current import policy, duties and product standards. Separate verified quotes from estimates and include quote expiry dates.

For neighbouring land routes, verify border crossing, transit and documentation requirements with the freight forwarder. For island destinations, compare sailing frequency, transshipment risk and destination handling charges. Small trial shipments can help validate demand, but only after the full landed-cost calculation works.

No live price or demand data is asserted in this article. Use it as a framework and refresh market inputs before making a purchase or sales commitment.

Quality · Packaging

Export packaging and quality checks that prevent disputes

Make product expectations measurable before goods are packed and dispatched.

Read article

Quality disagreements are easier to prevent when the specification is precise. Define product grade, size, permitted defects, tolerances, packing material, net weight, marking, batch identification and inspection method in the purchase contract. For fresh goods, state how condition will be assessed and at what point.

For every shipment, keep the final approved specification, packing list, batch/lot details, loading photographs and copies of certificates or test reports that are actually issued. If an independent inspection is required, name the inspection company, timing, sampling method, costs and whether the result is binding.

Packaging should protect the product during the actual route, handling and storage conditions. Confirm ventilation and stacking for fresh produce; moisture and barrier protection for dehydrated products; and label requirements for the destination. Do not print unsupported shelf-life, certification or origin claims.

Agree in writing on claim deadlines, evidence requirements, survey procedures and remedies before the goods ship. Clear records protect both buyer and seller and make repeat business easier.
